The beach is the number one reason most people plan a vacation in Blankenberge. And for good reason: the town boasts some of the widest, best-maintained sandy beaches on the entire Belgian coast, with excellent facilities and a promenade that buzzes with life from spring through autumn.
The Beach
Blankenberge's beach stretches for kilometres along the North Sea. The sand is fine and golden, the shore gently slopes into shallow water, and the beach is cleaned and maintained daily during the summer season. Lifeguards are on duty at designated zones in peak season.
Key features of the beach:
- Width: At low tide, the beach can be extraordinarily wide — up to 200 metres in places — giving plenty of room even on busy summer days
- Family-safe: Shallow water zones make it ideal for children; play equipment and entertainment for kids are available in summer
- Facilities: Showers, toilets, sun lounger and parasol rental, beach bars and snack stands
- Accessibility: Matting and beach wheelchairs available at certain access points (check with Visit Blankenberge)
- Dogs: Rules vary by season and zone — dogs are generally restricted on the main bathing beach in summer but allowed in designated areas
The Zeedijk (Sea Promenade)
The Zeedijk is Blankenberge's famous sea dike and promenade. Running parallel to the beach, it is the social heart of the town. Lined with restaurants, cafés, ice cream parlours, shops, and terraces, it is perfect for a leisurely stroll at any time of day.
Highlights along the Zeedijk:
- The Paravang — an ornate art nouveau windscreen structure, once used to shelter promenaders from coastal winds. Today it is a popular photo spot and a symbol of Blankenberge's Belle Époque heritage
- The Pier — extending 350m into the sea at the eastern end of the main beach
- Beach clubs — including Beachclub Blankenberge and seasonal pop-up bars with sunset views
- The marina (Jachthaven) — with restaurants and boat views at the western end
Water Sports & Activities
For active visitors, Blankenberge offers a range of water sports and beach activities:
- Windsurfing and kitesurfing — equipment rental and lessons available at local surf centres
- Beach volleyball — courts set up on the sand in summer; tournaments are held during events
- Kayaking and paddleboarding — available through operators like Wavefun
- Sea excursions — rescue boat tours and water taxi rides from the harbour
- Cycling along the coast — the coastal cycle path runs behind the dike and connects all Belgian seaside towns
Beach Bars & Clubs
Several beach bars and clubs operate along the Blankenberge coast, particularly in summer:
- Beachclub Blankenberge — modern beach club on the Zeedijk (visit-blankenberge.be)
- Surfers Paradise — relaxed beach bar atmosphere
- O'Neill Beach Club — popular with a younger crowd
Many bars host DJ sets, live music, and sunset parties during July and August.
Beach Walks
One of the great pleasures of a Blankenberge vacation is a long walk along the shoreline. You can walk west towards Wenduine and De Haan, or east towards Bredene and Ostend. At low tide the hard sand is perfect for jogging. The coastal tram stops at regular intervals if you want to walk one way and ride back.
Best Times for the Beach
- June–August: Warmest water (around 18–20°C), all facilities open, busiest period
- May & September: Quieter, still pleasant for sunbathing and walking; some facilities may have reduced hours
- Winter: Dramatic seascapes, storm watching, and empty beaches for peaceful walks
Practical Beach Tips
- Bring wind protection — even on sunny days, coastal wind can be brisk
- Blue Flag beaches: Blankenberge has been awarded Blue Flag status for water quality and environmental management
- Check tide times if planning long beach walks — the difference between high and low tide is significant
- Sunscreen is essential; the sea breeze can mask how strong the sun is
